The multi-language storybooks are very neat projects that draw on students past experiences and knowledge. This project also helps to increase students' self-esteem and affirm their identity, especially in students who are struggling to learn English. I think this parents comments are very telling about the benefits of utilizing a students' schema to enhance their learning. ELL students are able to express themselves in their native languages, work with students who are fluent in English and include parents in their schoolwork.

I participated in this project when I was in Grade 8 Social Studies. I absolutely loved it because I was able to use my past experiences and knowledge to create something very meaningful to me.

I still remember writing a news story about jumping into the Pacific Ocean from a pier with my sister, writing about my dad as my hero and writing a movie review for "A Walk to Remember"

Further, our teacher affirmed our interests, hard work and identities by laminating the project and hanging it on the wall.

Reflecting on this experience has made me realize how important utilizing students' schema is to my educational philosophy.
