Be Passionate!

Over the course of this semester I have been developing my thoughts about what an "engaged student" actually looks like. However, I realized that if we are expecting and hoping that our future students will be engaged students, then we should be striving to be engaged students ourselves. I examined myself, but I did not see many signs of being an engaged student. I approached many assignments hesitantly, seeing them as excess work. Once I recognized this trend, I began trying to become an engaged student myself. I tried to shift my perspective; rather than seeing my assignments as a mounting pile of work, I began to see them as an opportunity to reach my goals of becoming a good teacher. Completing assignments was not as much about the grade- instead, they served as learning opportunities. I reminded myself of why I was in this program. I rediscovered my passion for teaching and began fully investing myself into my work. I put my best efforts into completing the readings, participating in class discussions, and handing in quality work.

Therefore, I now understand that an engaged student is a student who is passionate about reaching their goals and intrinsically motivated to do the work in order to reach them. Further, in the K-12 environment, students are not going to be invested or engaged in class if they see that their teacher is not invested or engaged in class. I believe that continuing to motivate myself to pursue my current educational and personal growth goals will be highly beneficial to my future students.
